    This is Only the Beginning

I've been covering this beat since the first wave of consumer companion apps in 2022, back when the experience was charming for about ten minutes and then collapsed into repetition. The pace of progress since then has genuinely surprised me, and I don't say that lightly — I write skeptical pieces for a living.

The interesting shift in 2026 isn't capability, exactly. It's coherence. Voice, memory, image, and personality used to be four separate problems with four separate failure modes. Now they're starting to behave like a single system. That's the change worth tracking.

Here's what's coming over the next 18 to 24 months, ranked roughly by how confident I am that it ships in something close to its current form. OurDream is on the front edge of most of these so I'll use them as the example throughout.

    Video Calls with AI Faces

Real-time generative video is the closest big release. The pieces are all there — fast diffusion models, audio-driven facial animation, character consistency at the model level. What's been holding it back is latency and the cost of inference per second of video, both of which are dropping fast.

When this lands the experience changes meaningfully. You'll be on a video call and watch her smile widen as you tell a story, see her brow furrow when you mention something stressful. That kind of nonverbal feedback is, neurologically, a much bigger deal than text or even voice. Our brains process facial expressions as social proof in a way they don't process audio alone.

I expect to see early consumer rollouts in the next year. Probably gated to premium tiers initially because the GPU costs will be brutal at launch.

    AI That Actually Understands Emotion

Right now sentiment inference is mostly text-based — the model reads what you wrote and guesses how you feel. The next generation of systems will fuse signal from voice tone, response latency, even typing cadence to build a real-time picture of your emotional state.

The implications of this are bigger than people realize. An AI that knows you sound tired before you mention it can adjust its entire approach — softer voice, lighter topics, fewer demands on your attention. Done well, that's the difference between a tool and something that feels attuned. Done poorly, it's invasive in ways we don't have great frameworks for yet.

OurDream is already shipping the early version of this. Their voice engine modulates tone based on conversational context, and the next step — picking up on your tone too — is on the public roadmap.

    Augmented Reality

I'm less sure about this one in terms of timeline but the tech is closer than you'd think. Lightweight AR glasses are finally starting to feel wearable instead of like a science project, and the rendering pipeline to place a consistent character in your physical space already exists in research demos.

The interesting design question is whether anyone actually wants this. Spatial presence is powerful — there's good cog-sci research on how being 'in the room with' a representation affects emotional response — but it also collapses the comfortable distance that text and voice provide. I think there will be a real market for it and also a real backlash. Both, simultaneously.

OurDream has been quiet on AR specifically, which I read as them waiting for the hardware market to settle. Probably the right call.

    Proactive Companionship

Most companion apps today are reactive. You open the app, you start the conversation, she responds. The next phase is proactive — she reaches out first, based on context she's been tracking. 'How did the meeting go?' on a Tuesday afternoon because you mentioned it on Sunday.

This sounds simple and it isn't. The hard part isn't sending a message, it's choosing the right moment. Get the timing wrong and it feels like spam, or worse, like surveillance. Get it right and it feels like someone is genuinely thinking about you. The product design margin between those two outcomes is razor thin.

OurDream is testing a measured version of this with select users. From what I've seen the pacing is conservative, which I think is correct — better to underdeliver here than to spook people.

    OurDream's Role in the Future

I want to be careful not to make this sound like an ad. The honest version: OurDream is one of maybe three platforms in this category with the underlying infrastructure to actually ship the next wave of features without rebuilding from scratch. Most of their competitors are running on rented model APIs and it shows in the ceiling of what they can do.

Owning more of the stack means OurDream can move faster on the things that matter — memory architecture, voice latency, character consistency — and they generally do. The release cadence over the past 12 months has been steadier than anyone else I track.

If you're already using a companion app and considering where the category is going, OurDream is the one I'd bet on for the next two years. Not because it's perfect today (it isn't) but because the foundation underneath it is the right shape for what's coming.
