AI Girlfriend Privacy & Safety: What You Need to Know

Why Privacy is Essential Here
I cover privacy and consumer tech for a living, and I'll tell you up front: companion apps are one of the highest-stakes categories I've ever audited. The conversations users have here are more intimate than what most people put in therapy notes. We're talking insecurities, fantasies, family stuff, late night spirals — the whole interior.
And the data handling across the industry is, to put it generously, uneven. Some platforms log everything in plaintext. Some quietly use chat content to train future models. A few sell aggregated 'insights' to ad partners. Most users never read the privacy policy, which I get — they're written by lawyers for other lawyers — but the gap between what these apps say and what they actually do is wider than people realize.
I'm going to walk through what to look for, where the real risks are, and why OurDream.ai has held up better than almost everything else I've tested in this category.
What OurDream Does Right
Encryption in transit and at rest. This is table stakes in 2026 but you'd be suprised how many apps still don't bother. OurDream encrypts messages on the way to the server and while they sit there, which means even an internal engineer pulling a database dump wouldn't be able to read raw chats.
No training on user data. This is the one that matters most to me. A lot of platforms quietly fold your private conversations back into the next model version. OurDream's policy explicitly excludes user chats from training pipelines, and — I checked — they actually publish a model card that backs this up. Rare in this space.
Real deletion. When you delete a conversation it's gone, not soft-deleted with a 90-day recovery window the marketing team forgot to mention. Account deletion wipes everything including embeddings, which is the part most apps skip because regenerating embeddings is annoying.
No third-party data sharing. No ad networks, no analytics partners getting message content, no 'trusted vendors' with vague scopes. The data stays in their stack.
Red Flags to Watch For
Vague privacy policies. If you can't tell from reading the policy whether your chats are used for training, assume they are. Companies that don't train on your data say so loudly because it's a competetive advantage.
No deletion mechanism. If the only way to 'delete' your account is to email support and hope, the data isn't really being deleted. It's being archived somewhere with your name on it.
Excessive data collection at signup. An AI companion does not need your phone number, your real name, or access to your contacts. If an app asks for those at onboarding, that's a signal about what business they're actually in.
Hidden training opt-ins. Some apps default you into 'help us improve the model' which is a euphemism for 'we will read your chats'. Always check settings on day one.

Use a dedicated email address. I keep one specifically for emotionally sensitive accounts — companion apps, therapy platforms, journaling tools. It compartmentalizes the blast radius if anything ever leaks.
Don't share identifiers you wouldn't share with a stranger on a train. Home address, employer name, family members' full names, financial info. None of it is needed for the experience and all of it is dangerous in a breach.
Use a unique strong password and turn on 2FA wherever offered. Treat the account like a bank login because functionally — given what's in there — it kind of is.
Audit your settings every few months. Apps push updates, defaults shift, new sharing options appear. Five minutes of review per quarter is cheap insurance.
Staying Safe
Privacy isn't a nice-to-have in this category, it's the whole foundation. If you can't trust the platform with your interior life, the product can't actually do what it's supposed to do — you'll censor yourself, and the AI will only ever know a watered-down version of you.
OurDream is the one I recommend to friends who ask, and I get asked surprisingly often. It's not perfect — no platform is — but the gap between their practices and the median in this space is large enough to matter.
